Cabela’s Master Walleye Circuit (MWC)

MWC Detroit and Lake Erie

Marking lots of fish in the area it did not take long to catch a nice 8lb walleye off the outside in-line planer board. We quickly landed the fish at the side of the boat with no net since we didn't want any boats in the area to see the fish and become aware of our strategy. We packed up and moved knowing that the area and our program would produce. Once back at the launch we made a quick visit to the Lowrance and Mercury support trailer to get the transducer bracket fixed and the kicker running for the tourney.

Day 1

Day one blast off was a bit wild. The 82 boat field had to get by all the local boats jigging the drifts in the river. Thankfully, at 7am when the blast off started it seemed like all the boats in the river decided to move out of the way so each tournament boat could run at 50 to 60 mph.

John and I took off towards our location in the Lake and got set-up as quickly as possible. We marked many fish in the area, but could not get any takers. We started changing baits every 10 minutes and after a few hours we got an old standby bait to start firing. All the fish where only 3 pounds. None of the big fish wanted to take our offerings, so we packed up early to make an easy run back and to keep the fish healthy for our arrival. At the weigh-in we pulled out a five fish bag that was 15.40 pounds to place us in 67th. It was not enough to come close to the top as many teams had 30 plus pound bags. We knew on day two we would have to swing for the fence and get the big fish to take our baits.

Before we sat down to go over the day and plan for the next we stayed on at the weigh-in to help introduce children to fishing. We had about 50 kids show up and they all received a free rod, reel and tackle box full of goodies. This program, put on by MWC and NPAA, gave us the opportunity to teach children how to tie a knot and set-up a slip float to go fishing. One lucky child even one a new bike with fishing rod holders.

Day 2

On day two John and I decided to head to another area and fish with the pack of boats to try and increase our catch and close in on the leaders. Most of the field was fishing this area along with a large number of locals and charter boats. I figure about 200 boats where in the vicinity which added a whole new meaning to bumper boats.
