Crank baits that are popular in this grouping are Original Floating Rapala’s in solid and jointed bodies, Bagley Bang-O, Yo-Zuri Crystal Minnows, and Jerk Baits by Smithwick and Rapala. The next bait that works with active walleye in warm water and most times of the year are Banana shaped baits that have very energetic tail movement. These baits are walleye catching machines when walleye are on the feed, they just can’t resist the tail dancing of a crank running past them while feeding on bait fish. Popular baits in this style are Reef Runners, Walleye Minnows, Rapala Tail Dancers and Mann’s Stretch 20+. The last group that works all year round for walleye are shad style baits, some days in the fall the walleye want a compact shad shaped bait and this seems to be the only active bait for the day. The Bagley Small Fry Shad is a favorite of mine because you can troll it at any speed and it seems to produce a movement walleye like. You can run it at any depth with lead-core line and it keeps it’s walleye catching movement. Other popular baits that fall in the category are the Rapala Shad rap, CC Shad, Grappler Shad and Rattling Spots. |

Colour Last but not least is colour. The reason I place colour as the third most important element is if you have depth and movement right, a walleye in most every situation take a bait with very little contemplation over colour. On the contrary there are colours that seem to be prominent for walleye like Chartreuse, Perch and in the clear waters of the Great Lakes Purple.
